Frostburg State University, Fall 2005
For the stencil design project, students chose an issue they felt passionate
about, or a topic to which they wanted to draw the public’s attention.
As an introductory 2-D assignment, the technique of designing and cutting
used to create stencils is well suited to the following learning objectives:
-emphasizing the process of research and message content
-focusing on thumbnails and roughs as useful tools for design development
-encouraging the use of simple shapes and designs
-developing an in-depth understanding of negative and positive space
-introducing the analogue versions of digital tools available in graphics
software
-introducing some of the hands-on skills of traditional design production:
sketching and cutting
