What do we do when we successfully eliminate the penny and there's this big empty slot in the cash drawers of America? The U.S. Mint already has us covered. We can use that now-vacant spot for real money: The $1 coin. The dollar coin has been around for decades, but it has never been able to unseat the mighty dollar bill.

The dollar bill... the sweaty, dog-eared, ripped up, cocaine-coated foundation of American capitalism. We can do better. We have done better. The Sacagawea "Golden Dollar" was a step in the right direction. It tarnished too quickly, but that can be fixed. The point was that they were great for vending machines and they were fun to use instead of regular dollar bills. It also freed up our wallets so that we knew, if there was anything in there at first glance, it was at least $5, and possibly more.

WashingtonDollarIn the past there was the old Susan B. Anthony.  Although no longer in production, it can still be found shining brightly in circulation.  In the future, the dollar coin will have another chance at earning popularity with the arrival of the American Presidents series.

Above is the design for the obverse face of the forthcoming dollar coin in the Presidential $1 Coin Program from the US Mint.  Attractive, useful, and it still pays homage to George Washington, so it lessens to blow to Washington advocates who fear that he'll be forgotten should the greenback become extinct.
