Curious about my invisibility as a foreigner in England, I decided to concentrate on the most glaring difference between my British hosts and me: our accents. After speaking with over 120 people, it became apparent that the accuracy of the accent was far less interesting than the content of what people chose to say when pretending to be from the United States.
